2003: The year of Mars!

Mars image The National Astronomy Week committee in the UK held another "Week", 23–30 August 2003.  This site has been left in place as it still contains useful information. For the latest NAW site, click here.
  • The year has plenty of astronomical events:
  • During the Week, Mars will be the closest it has been to Earth for thousands of years.
  • The British-built Beagle 2 lander will be sent to Mars
  • Britain will see two eclipses of the Moon and one of the Sun
  • Mercury will transit across the face of the Sun
  • The Society for Popular Astronomy and ASTRA (Association in Scotland to Research into Astronautics) will both celebrate their 50th anniversaries.
